Another option for treatment are water filters. In the last years new lower cost filters entered the market in Malawi<\/p>\n

Advantages compared to Chlorine<\/strong><\/h3>\n
    \n
  • – Good quality filters do eliminate\u00a0Cryptosporidium.<\/li>\n
  • – Filters do not give a taste or smell like chlorine so people like it better<\/li>\n
  • – In general the consistence of use of\u00a0filters is much higher than Chlorine.\u00a0Once people are used to take water from a filter they will do that daily.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Disadvantages compared to Chlorine<\/strong><\/h3>\n
      \n
    • – High upfront cost<\/li>\n
    • – Not yet available everywhere, since\u00a0it is still new, the supply chain\u00a0needs to develop more<\/li>\n
    • – The Siphon model is more\u00a0complicated than the Table top\u00a0model so needs more training in\u00a0maintenance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • Filters remove germs in a mechanical way, no chemicals or additives are used<\/li>\n
      • Filters like Safi model and Tulip siphon filters comply with the WHO standards for Bacteria and Protozoa (removal 99.995%)<\/li>\n
      • Filter elements last for 1 to 1.5 years , after that they need replacement<\/li>\n
      • Table top filters like the Asian model have a filer capacity of 25 -30 litres. The Safi filter is 50 Litres per day. The siphon model is 100 litres per day<\/li>\n
      • Cost; Safi filter ca 18 US$. Filter elements ca 7 US$<\/strong><\/li>\n
      • Cost; Asian Filters 40 \u2013 100 US$<\/strong><\/li>\n
