1. Manual Drilling: SHIPO Drill<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Description<\/strong><\/h3>\n

An option to make manual drilled tube wells is the so called SHIPO drill. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Advantages compared to hand dug wells<\/strong><\/h3>\n
    \n
  • – Is faster<\/li>\n
  • – Can be cheaper in soils where a well\u00a0needs to be completely lined.<\/li>\n
  • – More water guarantee in dry season\u00a0since it can drill deep into the aquifer<\/li>\n
  • – Can be done at any time no need to\u00a0wait for the dry season<\/li>\n
  • – Safer. Hand dug wells may collapse<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Disadvantages compared hand digging:<\/strong><\/h3>\n
      \n
    • – Requires specific tools<\/li>\n
    • – Does not work in case of boulders\u00a0or gravel larger than 2 cm<\/li>\n
    • – Requires\u00a0 skilled technicians<\/li>\n
    • – Less storage capacity<\/li>\n
    • – A disadvantage of a borehole\u00a0(compared to a hand dug well) is that\u00a0there is no access to the water if the\u00a0pumps is broken<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Information<\/strong><\/h3>\n
        \n
      • SHIPO drill method is used much in Tanzania and trained via, promoted by SHIPO.<\/li>\n
      • It is a combination of sludging and percussion and can be combined with Jetting.<\/li>\n
      • It has a heavy lower drill pipe and other drill pipes are of PVC so light weight<\/li>\n
      • It makes tube wells with casings of 2 to 6 inch diameter and drill to 50 meters deep<\/li>\n
      • Cost depends on soil type, length of screen and diameter of casing<\/li>\n
      • Cost indication; 100 \u2013 1000 US$ <\/strong>\u00a0Depending depth, soil, diameter casing (excl. pump)<\/li>\n

        2. Manual Drilling: Mzuzu Drill<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

        Description<\/strong><\/h3>\n

        In softer soils with water levels of 8 meter or less a tube well can also be made with a the Mzuzu drill using a Soil punch and bailer.<\/p>\n

        Advantages compared to SHIPO drilling<\/strong><\/h3>\n
          \n
        • – Is much cheaper<\/li>\n
        • – Less tools and skills needed<\/li>\n
        • – Easier to see the soil coming out<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Disadvantages compared SHIPO drilling<\/strong><\/h3>\n
            \n
          • – Can not go as deep<\/li>\n
          • – More difficult in hard soils less\u00a0percussion force<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            • With a soil punch and tube bailer , tube well can be made in areas with soft , sandy soils<\/li>\n
            • With a bailer on a tube, sand is pumped out and the PVC pipe (screen) goes down.<\/li>\n
            • Cost depends on soil type, length of screen and diameter of casing<\/li>\n
            • Cost indication for a 6 m deep tube well. 3 inch casing: 50 \u2013 200 US$ <\/strong>(excl.pump)<\/li>\n
            • Cost indication complete system( 6 m deep well. 3 inch casing, concrete cover, Rope pump model 2: 150 \u2013 350 US$ <\/strong><\/li>\n
